s14993308.jpg    s06222246.jpg

Alla Francesca / Brigitte Lesne / Gérard Lesne D'AMOURS LOIAL SERVANT

Veritas.pngThis recital continues a series begun by Alla Francesca on Opus 111, of which it is the third instalment (and the group's first recording for this label). I had preferred the first, 'Beaulte parfaite' (7/98), to the sequel, 'Armes, amours' (A/98). Here again is a rather mixed bag, ranging from Machaut to Ciconia and Cordier. The ensemble's three musicians are joined by the countertenor Gerard Lesne, who appears in much earlier repertory than we are used to hearing him in. His presence allows the group to explore music with two upper parts of similar range, a shared characteristic of many of the pieces sung here. Yet despite some fine singing, the vocal interventions seem strangely restrained, which is all the odder given that these are French musicians, from whom one might expect a more characterful approach to text (in this regard I would except Brigitte Lesne, whose ability to put the words across effectively is admirable).
The ensemble's three instrumentalists show remarkable versatility (not to mention virtuosity) in deploying all manner of instruments: winds, bowed and plucked strings, percussion. The results are mixed (I must admit that the bagpipe solo had me reaching for the volume control), but can hardly be accused of lacking definition. As a whole, however, the recital seems a shade unfocused, partly (again) because the individual performances are so variable; set against the urgent delivery of Amour m'a le cuer, for instance, is the disappointment of Senleches's La harpe de melodie for which Alla Francesca has used the deficient reading of the Codex Chantilly (which the Ferrara Ensemble also used in their otherwise admirable 'En doulz castel de Pavie', Harmonia Mundi, 8/98). It is a great pity that the only satisfactory recording of this wonderful piece (on the Medieval Ensemble of London's 'Ce diabolic chant' on Decca) remains unavailable. On a more positive note, one must applaud Alla Francesca's determination to assemble a sizeable corpus of late-medieval song. This is a repertoire where the discography lags far behind both scholarly endeavour and concert performance. (Fabrice Fitch / Gramophone)

Alla Francesca / Brigitte Lesne THIBAUT DE CHAMPAGNE Le Chansonnier du Roi

MI0003441881.jpgMentioned by Dante amongst 'the most illustrious poets of his time, Thibaut de Champagne (1201-1253), also called 'Thibaut the Songwriter', was one of France's greatest trouvères (or 'musician-poet' in langue d’oïl).
He left us some sixty songs, cultivating highly varied musical genres: songs of love and of the crusades, pastourelles, hymns to the Virgin, jeux-partis… Count of Champagne and King of Navarre, grandson of Marie de France and great-grandson of Eleanor of Aquitaine, he was chosen by the Holy See and numerous barons to lead a new crusade in 1239. A seal from 1226 portrays him on horseback, brandishing his sword.
This disc proposes an anthology of his compositions, all coming from the very famous songbook copied at the end of the 13th century: the 'King's manuscript'. As a counterpoint to the songs and in harmony with them, it also presents motets and instrumental dances representative of the musical repertoires of the period.

Edna Stern BACH Nun Komm' der Heiden Heiland

Cover.jpgYoung Israeli pianist Edna Stern has already recorded one album of what might be called extreme Bach arrangements, called Chaconne. This group of preludes and fugues, together with chorale-based pieces by Bach and (in a mysteriously single case) Brahms, is in its way even more extreme than the earlier release, in that Stern is mostly playing Bach's own notes. The three Bach chorales appear in arrangements by Ferruccio Busoni, and it is Busoni that provides the model for Stern's playing even where he is not present. It's not just that Stern plays a modern piano. The preludes and fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier, for her, each have their own particular moods, calling forth an entirely different pianistic approach. Tempo is flexible; articulation is varied and often luxuriously legato; the pedal is more or less constantly in action. Bach hasn't been played like this since the days of Russian pianist Samuil Feinberg, who perhaps was part of or close to Stern's pianistic family tree. One thing Stern adds to the style is an emphasis on bass lines, giving the music an organ-like texture. Is it Bach? Only partially; the rest of it is the Romantic adoration of the Baroque. Is it compellingly musical? Depends on your perspective. Plunge in anywhere to sample and determine whether you're on this remarkable young artist's wavelength. The Zig Zag Territoires label's studio sound captures every smear of Stern's pedals. (James Manheim)

Mix Tape #44 : Spring

mixtape_44_250.png

For my April mix tape, i’ve gone for a seasonal theme, exploring music that references and/or alludes to aspects of spring. While all the seasons are, by their nature, in a continual state of flux, i’ve personally always tended to think of spring and autumn as being ‘transitional’, more obviously progressing between opposite poles of light and warmth. Therefore, i’ve opted for a quite polarised collection of music, some of which can be heard from a cheerful, upbeat, thank-god-it’s-not-winter-anymore angle …

Bach Collegium Japan / Masaaki Suzuki BEETHOVEN Missa Solemnis

998abc.jpg
Beethoven began composing the Missa solemnis in 1819, when he learned that his patron (and pupil) Archduke Rudolph was going to be appointed Cardinal Archbishop of Olmütz. The plan was for the mass to be ready for performance at the enthronement celebrations in March 1820, but one year proved to be too little time. It wasn’t until almost three years later, in January 1823, that Beethoven was able to complete the work.
As might be expected, it was unparalleled in every respect – although composed for use during church services, even Beethoven’s contemporaries found that it exceeded the bounds of the genre. Beethoven himself was quite aware of both the dimensions and the importance of the work: in a letter he described it as ‘my greatest work’. It is also a work which over its course encompasses great contrasts: from the solemnity of the Kyrie and the intense excitement at the opening of the Gloria to the disturbing intimations of war during the closing Dona nobis pacem.
Originally founded with the aim of performing the choral works of Bach, the Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki are now taking another great leap, after their recent release of Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor. Described as ‘refreshingly open-hearted, spontaneous and natural’ their interpretation received a 2017 Gramophone Award. Joined by an eminent quartet of vocal soloists, the team now applies its expertise in period performance to Beethoven’s masterpiece.

Bach Collegium Japan / Masaaki Suzuki MOZART Requiem

6b5635.jpg
Masaaki Suzuki’s recording of Mozart’s incomplete Requiem is based on a new edition of the score by his son, the harpsichordist and organist Masato Suzuki. Those familiar with the regularly performed Süssmayr version will notice a couple of important changes – though to spot the others they may have to follow a score carefully.
Mozart’s assistant Franz Süssmayr was given the task of completing the Requiem following the great composer’s death. But Joseph Eybler – a musician Mozart apparently admired – had already made some interventions which Suzuki generally prefers to Süssmayr’s; in other places he has corrected some of the faulty writing for which Süssmayr has long been criticised. More noticeably, he adds a fugal Amen chorus to the Lacrimosa, based on a genuine sketch discovered in Berlin in 1960. He also follows the first edition of the score (1800) in allotting the great majority of the trombone part of the Tuba mirum – all but the first phrase in fact – to the bassoon, though this version is only included as an appendix.
Such details aside, the performance is notable for its super-clean orchestral edges and refinement – taken to such an extent that the result can feel distanced, however perfectly articulated. The soloists – a perfectly matched quartet – follow this approach to the point of sounding a little bloodless, not helped by the resonant acoustic, which creates a hazy impression. The Solemn Vespers are again of a piece, neat and perfectly efficient, but a little cool nevertheless, even in Carolyn Sampson’s direct Laudate Dominum. (George Hall)

Recording venue: All Hallows, Gospel Oak, London
Recording engineer: Anthony Howell; Producer: Mark Brown

Here's a superbly performed collection of American music for brass ensemble - strangely seldom performed and recorded by American ensembles. In particular, the first two and last  items, Charles Ive's From the Steeples and the Mountains and Processional and Samuel Barber's Mutations from Bach are three of the finest examples of 20th Century music for brass.

I first heard the Ives and Barber works in a 1978 BBC radio broadcast from a Promenade Concert given in Westminster Cathedral by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and was blown away by this magnificent and, to me at the time, completely unknown music. No doubt the cathedral acoustic made the works sound even more evocative with the clangorous bells and brass of the Ives title work really seeming to float down from the steeples and mountains.

Eventually, this recording appeared in the 1990s, again from a British ensemble, and although it doesn't quite match the earlier experience, it is still very fine. Most of the other works on this disc match the quality of the Ives and Barber although the Harris Chorale is over-long and the early Glass Sextet is fairly plain (although more interesting than much of his later minimalist works).

Interestingly, the Virgil Thomson Family Portraits sound more modernist than the Ruggles and Elliott Carter.
