Ida Haendel, CBE (born 15 December 1928) is a Polish-British violinist.

Born in 1928 to a Polish Jewish family in Chełm, her talents were evident when she picked up her sister’s violin at the age of three. Major competition wins paved the way for success. Performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto, she won the Warsaw Conservatory's Gold Medal and the first Huberman Prize in 1933. At the age of seven she competed against towering virtuosos – the likes of Oistrakh and Neveu – to become a laureate of the first Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in 1935.

These accolades enabled her to study with the esteemed pedagogues Carl Flesch in London and George Enescu in Paris. During World War II she played in factories and for British and American troops. In 1937 her London debut under the baton of Sir Henry Wood brought her worldwide critical acclaim, and began a lifelong association with the Proms, where she has appeared 68 times.

Haendel has made annual tours of Europe, and also appeared regularly in South America and Asia. Living in Montreal from 1952 to 1989, her collaborations with Canadian orchestras made her a key celebrity of Canadian musical life. Performing with the London Philharmonic in 1973, she was the first Western soloist invited to China following the Cultural Revolution.[6] Although she worked particularly with Sergiu Celibidache, she was also associated with Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Eugene Goossens, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Charles Munch, Otto Klemperer, Sir Georg Solti, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bernard Haitink, Rafael Kubelík and Simon Rattle, with whom she recorded the Elgar and Sibelius violin concertos, available on Testament SBT 1444.

In 1993, she made her concert début with the Berliner Philharmoniker. In 2006 she performed for Pope Benedict XVI at the former Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Later engagements include a tribute concert at London's National Gallery in honour of Dame Myra Hess's War Memorial Concerts, an appearance at the Sagra Musicale Malatestiana Festival in 2010, and a performance of Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in Miami with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ida_Haendel%252C_CBE.jpg

Ida Haendel has lived in Miami, Florida for many years and is actively involved in the Miami International Piano Festival. She is represented by Patrons of Exceptional Artists.

Her major label recordings have earned critical praise, particularly her performance of the Sibelius Concerto which elicited a fan letter from its composer: "I congratulate you on the great success, but most of all I congratulate myself, that my concerto has found an interpreter of your rare standard". The Sibelius Society awarded her the Sibelius Medal in 1982.

Ida Haendel has said that she has always had a passion for German music. Her recording career began on 10 September 1940 for Decca, initially of short solo pieces and chamber works. In April 1945, she recorded both the Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn concertos followed in 1947 by the Dvořák concerto. Her recording career spans nearly 70 years for major labels including EMI and Harmonia Mundi. In 1948-49 she recorded Beethoven's Violin Concerto, with Rafael Kubelik conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. Other acclaimed recordings are her renditions of the Brahms Violin Concerto (including one with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sergiu Celibidache...Celibidache's last studio recording)...and Tchaikovsky's with the National Symphony Orchestra conducted Basil Cameron.

Among her later recordings were the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, BWV1001-1006 by J S Bach, recorded at Studio 1 Abbey Road, London in 1995 recorded in analogue and issued by Testament.

She is equally passionate about the music of the 20th century, including Béla Bartók, Benjamin Britten and William Walton. Among her premiere performances have been Luigi Dallapiccola's Tartiniana Seconda, and Allan Pettersson's Violin Concerto No. 2, which was dedicated to her. Paying special tribute to her teacher George Enescu, her Decca recording of his Violin Sonata with Vladimir Ashkenazy in 2000 earned her a Diapason d'Or.

Haendel's highly emotive performances have inspired a generation of new violinists, including Anne-Sophie Mutter and Maxim Vengerov.

In August 2012 she was Honorary Artist at the Cambridge International String Festival. She is a regular adjudicator for violin competitions, including the Sibelius, the Carl Flesch, the Benjamin Britten, and the International Violin Competition. She has returned to her native Poland to judge the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań on a number of occasions, and was Honorary Chairwoman in 2011.

Review

Hyperion’s panoramic aural perspective, warmly detailed in quieter moments and tumultuously filled at the frequently frenzied, makes a best sonic case for these overloaded blockbusters, the glistening, profound orchestral capture rendering Florent Schmitt’s fin de siècle contrivance of luridly empurpled passages with varieties of violet and mauve, so to speak, as seen through smog in a Los Angeles sunset. That is, these winningly brioso accounts belong in any Schmitt collection, while the engaging swagger of the Suite sans esprit de suite is a net discographic gain. But it must also be said that as one goes back, and sound gathers hiss and graininess, performances become tauter, more telling, more surely idiomatic. For instance, Marek Janowski’s 1990 tilt at Salomé and the Psalm with Sharon Sweet and the Radio France Chorus and Orchestra (Apex 62764, Fanfare 30: 3), while similar in approach, is brisker and more bracing. Jean Martinon’s goose-stepping quick march in his 1972 go at Psalm XLVII , with the ORTF orchestra (nla EMI 749748), is bracingly brutal in a manner that leaves Fischer seeming to wallow; while Fischer’s sagging through the Psalm ’s sensuous midsection taxes Christine Buffle’s attempt to spirit up and sustain a putatively orientalizing rapture in her long solo (difficult, in any case, given Schmitt’s vapid, unmemorable melodizing) where Andrea Guiot, for Martinon, despite her recessed placement, manages this chore with aplomb at a marginally more pressing pace.

In La tragédie de Salomé , Fischer realizes Schmitt’s many garish effects with glowing assurance, only to be upstaged by the nonpareil Paul Paray in his 1958 go with the Detroit Symphony (Mercury 434 336) in which expressiveness of detail within a hair-grasping sweep leaves Fischer’s forces seeming to stagger and mumble. And if the composer’s own 1930 direction of the Straram Concerts Orchestra (EMI/Arkiv 54840) isn’t quite the last word in helter-skelter cataclysm—Fischer’s timings are most within a few seconds of Schmitt’s—it nevertheless evinces a plasticity and detailed animation one is unlikely to hear from contemporary bands. But comparisons are always invidious, and to state them at all is to overstate. The current issue is generally splendid, graced with sympathetic, richly informed notes by Calum MacDonald, and enthusiastically recommended.

Florent Schmitt (28 September 1870 – 17 August 1958) was a French composer. He was part of the group known as Les Apaches. At the age of 19 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Gabriel Fauré, Jules Massenet, Théodore Dubois, and Albert Lavignac. Schmitt wrote 138 works with opus numbers, in most of the major forms of music, except for opera. His most famous pieces are La tragédie de Salome and Psaume XLVII (Psalm 47). His own style, recognizably impressionistic, owed to the example of Debussy, and also had distinct traces of Wagner and Richard Strauss.

Review

Nearly four decades separate the works here but they are very recognisably by the same composer: Florent Schmitt, though eclectic, was remarkably consistent. Overall it’s a disc, lavishly recorded (and sounding especially fine in hi res guise), that offers a persuasive snapshot of a composer hardly over-represented on disc beyond a few key works.

And I’m not sure the two Shakesperean suites have ever sounded more luxurious, either. Composed to accompany a grand, self-financed 1920 show by Ida Rubinstein, this is music that is heavy with sultry eroticism, with dashes of other French composers of the time as well as, to my ears, the sonic ripeness of Richard Strauss’s 1914 Josephslegende.

Sakari Oramo’s new account is more leisurely than JoAnn Falletta’s recent Naxos recording with the Buffalo Philharmonic and he certainly gives the score space to convey its allure – from the languorous shimmers of the opening portrait of the two lovers through to the ominously bellicose ‘Le camp de Pompée’. The night in the queen’s palace is sensuously evoked: ‘soft shivers from muted violins against delicately agitated cymbal and sparkling celesta immediately conjure velvet night’, as Paul Griffiths puts it in his exemplary booklet note. The eroticism of ‘Orgie et Danses’, meanwhile, is always carefully controlled, even when, halfway through, it all collapses into a big sweaty heap of exhausted brass chords.

The Second Symphony dates from the very final years of Schmitt’s life – it was premiered in 1958, just months before he died. It’s a fine, serious work, full of invention. Its first movement, chattily swapping material between sections of the orchestra, gains considerable momentum from the character of its simple opening motif. The slow movement is noble, gravely seductive and quietly moving. Only the finale perhaps risks losing its way among rather too much jauntiness.

Again, as compared with the main rival – from Leif Segerstem – Oramo is distinctly leisurely: he takes over two minutes longer in that second movement, marked Lent sans excès. But he’s convincing and persuasive in this work too, and helped by superior playing and engineering – advantages that certainly pay dividends in these scores. Recommended.
