Thomas Tallis foi um verdadeiro gênio. É uma espécie de Bach inglês. É considerado por muitos como o maior compositor inglês de todos os tempos. Suas atividades como músico perpassam o reinado de quatro monarcas - três católicos e um protestante. Mesmo diante dessas variações, Tallis produziu uma obra densa e conseguiu enorme respeito. Neste disco, encontramos As lamentações do profeta Jeremias, baseada em texto bíblico homônimo, reputado ao profeta hebreu. O texto bíblico é um poema em forma de acróstico, descrevendo por meio de um lamento a queda de Jerusalém. É bastante bonito e sintomático da poesia judaica. O presente disco é muito agradável. Há ainda cinco obras com pequena extensão. Não deixe de ouvir. Uma boa apreciação!

John Wooldridge, bomber-composer

The British actor Dirk Bogarde made two famous film appearances as composers: as Liszt in Song Without End and as a musicalized version of Gustav von Aschenbach in Visconti's Death in Venice. One might add to the list, with an asterisk, Bogarde's performance as Wing Commander Tim Mason in the 1953 war picture Appointment in London, about the exploits of RAF bomber crews. True, Bogarde's character is not seen to have anything to do with music. But John Wooldridge, who came up with the film's story and co-wrote the screenplay, was a working composer, and the script is based on his experiences. Wooldridge also wrote the film's score — a rather unusual case of a composer evoking himself on film.

The best account of Wooldridge's life available is a Music Web International essay by his son, Hugh Wooldridge. During the war, he flew ninety-seven missions, an extraordinarily high number. He continued to compose while serving in the RAF. Hugh Wooldridge writes: "During the first three years of the war, and in between flying, he wrote his first and most notable musical work — a symphonic poem The Constellations (1944) working alternately on borrowed pianos and the local padre’s organ. Much of this was sketched during the long bombing missions over occupied mainland Europe." In 1944, Arthur Rodzinski and the New York Philharmonic read The Constellations at a rehearsal, and Rodzinski promised that he would play a new work if Wooldridge downed five German planes. When Wooldridge achieved that number, Rodzinksi led the composer's A Solemn Hymn to Victory, in late 1944. He received rather tepid reviews from the New York critics: Olin Downes, in the Times, said the piece was "noble in intention" but "technically not mature." Be that as it may, Wooldridge broke the Atlantic speed record while flying home.

After the war, Wooldridge produced a large quantity of film scores, as well as a number of concert pieces. The music for Appointment in London shows no lack of craftsmanship, although it can't be described as subtle. The film makes for uneasy viewing today, given what we know about the Allied campaign of area bombing. But it does capture the extraordinary psychic strain placed upon the likes of Wooldridge. "A crew member on a British bomber had a shorter life expectancy than an infantryman in the trenches of World War I," Ben McIntyre has written. Sadly, having survived all that, Wooldridge died in a car accident in 1958.

Janowski vuelve a la Filarmónica de Berlín

Llevaba largo tiempo la Filarmónica de Berlín sin contar con la presencia de Marek Janowski, hasta que la anterior temporada tuvieron que echar mano de él para una sustitución a última hora. Debió de gustarles su trabajo –Réquiem de Verdi–, porque esta vez sí que han incluido al maestro de Varsovia en su programación de abono. Y lo han hecho con un programa integrado por obras de Pfitzner y Bruckner que acabo de ver en directo a través de la Digital Concert Hall.

De Pfitzner se han interpretado los preludios correspondientes a cada uno de los tres actos de su ópera Palestrina. Me ha gustado mucho cómo Janowski aborda el dramatismo del acto segundo, pero en los otros dos he echado en falta esa mezcla de sensualidad y misticismo agridulce que, mirando con descaro al mundo de Parsifal, imprimía Christian Thielemann en su registro para DG, que escuché esta misma tarde. Ahora bien, Janowski tiene a su disposición una orquesta superior a la de su colega, a la que da verdadero gusto escuchar, y se beneficia de una toma sonora muy preferible –aun sin ofrecer tanta amplitud dinámica– a la que realizaron en su momento los ingenieros del sello amarillo.

Me ha aburrido la Cuarta sinfonía de Anton Bruckner. Los dos primeros movimientos me han parecido gélidos: increíblemente bien planificados, tensos y claros en la polifonía, atentamente matizados en la dinámica, por completo ajenos al preciosismo y al amaneramiento,pero sin alma. Ni vuelo lírico, ni poesía panteísta, ni delectación contemplativa, ni inquietud ante lo desconocido. Todo suena con una perfección aséptica, incapaz de conmover.

Mucho mejor el Scherzo, no precisamente efusivo pero sí vibrante y decidido. El Finale empezó francamente mal, nervioso y apresurado, pasando luego a secciones en las que el maestro hizo gala de un fraseo "pastoril" a todas luces inapropiado. Poco a poco se fue centrando y logró picos de tensión de admirable incandescencia, siempre beneficiados por el fulgor increíble de unos metales potentísimos y de una cuerda robusta a más no poder, pero aun así el movimiento no pudo evitar serias irregularidades en su arquitectura, culminando sin grandeza ni fuerza visionaria. A la postre, una mediocre recreación que no hace sino confirmar el tópico: Janowski es más un solvente kapellmeister que un verdadero intérprete.
